Wisdom teeth are called so because they erupt a little later in life when one is supposed to be mature and endowed with wisdom!!
However as these third molars are the last teeth to erupt into the oral cavity, there is frequently a lack of space to accommodate them in the jaw. Hence they are frequently impacted - that is, they may erupt partially and often crooked or they may fail to erupt at all. Partially erupted and impacted wisdom teeth should be removed. They are a source of gum problems, may cause pain and frequently are the cause of food lodgement and decay with the second molar tooth. Hence their removal is necessary - at times a minor surgical procedure will be required to remove the impacted tooth.
The procedure can be performed in the dental clinic itself under local anaesthesia and it is prudent to get the upper and lower wisdom teeth of one side removed together. Removal of all 4 wisdom teeth can also be carried out under general anaesthesia. Your dentist will discuss and determine what is best for you. However remember not to hesitate to remove your wisdom teeth - they are one of the most common sources of dental trouble!
